He comes to the hostel. On the way to the entrance, he meets the guys with whom he is studying and her – that girl named Nicky in the company of two friends – he slightly prevented them from going through.
One of Nicky’s friends
The school is on the other side (hinting that he is going in the wrong direction).
He meets the eyes of the girl he loves for a second, and immediately looks away – firstly, he is embarrassed by her, and secondly, he stinks of dust from the factory… So he almost does not stop and goes on.
Everybody was on their way to school, and he still had to get his backpack and, if possible, change his clothes.
He enters the room where he lives with another neighbor. He pulls back the corner of his mattress on the far side of his head. He puts the money under his mattress on the second tier of the bunk bed. He has a magazine there. He opens it on a page where three young girls take a selfie together fooling around on the camera (anybody who sees this advertisement should have a feeling that the phone makes them happy)… That page with an ad for a new iPhone serves him like a vault.
He easily recounts how much money is there. He looks a little disappointed.
Next to the magazine is his father’s diary, entitled “Research on mutation,” which in its format and binding is very similar to a book — perhaps it was a draft of the book he intended to print someday. This book is the little that is left of his parents – this is the book of his father about his studies of mutations. He opens the book at the Preface:
“Hello my dear friend – mutant. Yes, I am talking to you. If you read this, it means that you already know that something special is hidden in you…”
Our hero flips through a couple of pages and reads further:
“… my research confirms the theory of the incredible abilities that each of us possesses. I know for sure that every person has an extraordinary power that breaks out every day, but we don’t know how to free it and therefore our hidden abilities remain unused for most of us…”
The hero turns over a couple of pages and reads further:
“…You must have already heard about the incredible abilities of people in emergency situations, like one man has turned a car over, without any physical training?…”
“…I have a feeling that someone is constantly interfering with me and my work. I think that there is somebody very powerful behind this, maybe even governments – they don’t want people to know the truth because the truth is contagious – if people find out the truth, their world will be shattered…”
The hero slides down a couple of paragraphs:
“…Do you remember how in 1954, Roger Bannister overcame this “imaginary limit” of human capabilities. The most interesting thing is that after him, 37 runners overcame this limit over the next 12 months. What was considered beyond human capabilities suddenly became almost something mediocre…”
The hero turns over a couple more pages:
“…Despite the lack of funding and any kind of support, I still do not stop exploring these phenomena. So far I have more questions than answers, but the main hypothesis is this: each of us has an extraordinary power that can come out under the influence of a special state and an event in a person’s life – a trigger. The awakening of forces can occur at any age, but the highest likelihood of it is precisely at a transitional age – when our body undergoes a series of changes – metamorphosis…”
At this point the book ends, although there are still many blank pages in the book.
In one familiar movement he closes both the magazine, the book and the mattress. He changes quickly, picks up his backpack, and leaves the room for school.
He went through a checkpoint while hurrying to school, and he was already near the entrance door when he is “shouted out” by a woman who sits on a checkpoint (in appearance a woman of 70 years, named Adrian).
Adrian
Young man, haven’t you forgotten anything?!!
He immediately stops and returns to the checkpoint – all the time the woman frowns incredulously at the young man. Suddenly he hugs her like a beloved aunt.
Adrian
That’s better, okay – run – you will be late again !? You do not need to work at night, but studies!
Hero
Adrian, I told you that I can do both! Well, I have to go…
Adrian
Have you done your lessons?
Hero
Me? Yes, of course, as always – all done and packed right here, yeh, well almost all of them, but you know how they say – sitting is killing, right!?!
Adrian
You haven’t even learned to lie! Ok, go.
