Scene 11: Work hard, play hard
The day “X” day has arrived and the Hero and his friend go to the party. They almost there and they are exited.
Hero
It’s all very strange. I’ve never been to a party and I don’t even know how to behave.
Pit:
Normal, natural – just be your self, you know.
Hero
Yes, they say so, but they don’t say that this is the most difficult thing especially under the new cercumstances. Maybe, we should behave just like the others, chill and do stuff like the rich guys do at the party of the year at the friend’s house with a swimming pool?!
Pit:
If we just knew what it is like…
By the time they got into the house. They saw some familiar faces. Took some drinks – there are different sorts of drinks, but in general there are just 2 types – with and without some dizzy substance.
Hero
Let’s take the neutral drinks – I don’t know what how I would react on that. The Nicky is here – I don’t want her to see how I threw up. Besides, she got one without the thing…
Pit agreed, they took the drinks and found place on the couch.
They have’ve been chatting to each other. As some other guests came across they’ve been asked who they are – because they haven’t been seen here before.
And the hero was always staring at what Nicky is doing, unsuccessfully trying to hide it even from Pit.
John even lost the thread of reasoning a couple of times.
Nicky was hanging out with her friends Sara and Melany.
Suddenly, John even stops Pit from speaking.
John:
Wait, did you see that?
Pit:
See how my friend interrupted me for the hundredth time? Listen, I know why we are here, but at least thought we would talk about the new business opportunities? You know I’ve been talking to you a couple of times about new NASA-X space project – they are hiring…
John:
Yes, let’s talk about it later. Have you seen this?
That was even kind of rude from John, but Pit saw how worried John was.
Pit:
Have seen what?
John:
That guy, the guy who is trying to run after Nicky, he just put something into her glass. Did you saw that? Now, he puts the package from it into his pocket. We have to stop him.
Pete does not have time to answer, John is already rushing to the table where the Nicky and her friends were hanging out.
John:
Nicky, don’t drink this!
Craig:
What a hell, who are you?
John:
It doesn’t matter who I am – Nicky, put the glass down – don’t drink it. He put something in your glass.
Craig:
What? Who let this freak in into my house? Get out of my house!
By the time this little mess got attention of the whole party – even music has been stopped.
John:
I’ll leave right after you will show what is in your right pocket.
Craig:
(tells in more quiet manner).
That’s ridiculous. I’m not gonna do what this freak tells. You both, get out of here!
Nicky, this is not true!
He pours the contents of the glass into the sink and offers to pour something else.
Nicky:
If you think he is not right – and you didn’t do anything – prove it! Just turn out your pocket and prove it? It’s as easy as it is!
Craig:
Nobody can tell me what to do! Fuck it. You’re just a bunch of orphans who came to eat for free.
Nicky:
Craig, you are an asshole. John, Pit – let’s get out of here.
After saying this she also took a look at Melany and Sara if asking the whether they are coming with them or not. They hesitated but decided to stay on the party, but Nicky wasn’t disappointed – she just looked at them once and gone away with John and Pit.
After they left the house, they were walking for a while keeping silence. But then, suddenly, Nicky explodes:
Nicky:
He is such a jerk! No, I’ve never liked him anyway, but that he’s able to mix something into my glass – it’s just (she shakes her head staring into the ground)… And my friends – I put up with his company for their sake and didn’t push him away too much, because they begged me to, so they could continue to hang out with those stupid friends of his. Now my dear friends – they just stayed there! No, I’ve concealed my feelings there, but I just can’t believe it!
John and Pit just walked along in silence, while she was furiously complaining about her friends. In a couple of minutes she goes like:
Nicky:
I’m hungry, Let’s move to McDonald’s? Are you with me?
John was over the moon at having spoken to Nicky for more than a few seconds for the first time, and he was ready to go anywhere just to keep the evening going.
Only the poorest people went to McDonald’s, but even this was a rare enough pleasure for orphans.
They had a great time talking on a variety of topics: they’ve laughed at all the inconveniences they have to endure in the hostel, at politicians and at the rich guys at the school, these pompous children who pretend to be cool macho, but who haven’t even learned how to tie shoelaces themselves or how to fry eggs – they probably don’t even know how an egg looks like when it’s not cooked – servants must be doing it for them…
Nicky and John felt so good and comfortable, and it seemed to them that they could talk for hours on absolutely any topic. Even Pete actively supported their conversation, although he usually behaves quite closed in companies of more than two people – partly because he is a pronounced introvert, and partly because he often finds his interlocutors boring at best and just plain stupid at worst.
The evening was saved. After they took Uber and drove to the hostel together. Nicky, once again thanked “her hero for saving him from the clutches of a dragon”, and kissed him on the cheek.
After that evening John has understood that he wants to tell her about his feelings as soon as possible.
